In this presentation, GRAMMY-nominated mastering engineer Alan Silverman shows how music streaming services have turned the world of mastering for loudness upside down.

Explore how the tools and techniques that mix and mastering engineers of the 21st century are changing quickly in response to the automatic volume normalization happening on platforms like Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, Google Play, Pandora and more.

Amazing. Thanks for posting this.

One slight correction. Streaming services will turn down songs to meet their lufs standards but not all will turn up to meet the standards. There's a site where you can analyze tunes called loudness penalty which will tell you which services will alter the levels to fit their criteria and by how much.

So if i wanted distortion, i would limit the track, after getting the sound i want i would adjust the level with a VU meter? Interesting idea. I think iit may be very easy with many limiters. Its simple to just adjust the ouput. Makes more sense to me!

Loudness has made the most extreme death metal bands sound like tiny hissing noises.

A shame Alan wasn't allocated more time for his presentation. He was just getting started. If he had more time, I'm sure he would have also discussed how peak clipping introduces harmonics that not only add distortion, but make the digital compression algorithm for the stream confused and have difficulty in removing data bits. Often the bits removed are not redundant but are essential to the audio and we do perceive them in an A/B test. Bob Orban said decades ago that when you adjust one of his Optimods, you can easily introduce distortion that the end listener can NEVER remove. The listener can always turn up the volume on their end if they need more gain, but once you hit the clipper all bets are off. That is even more important in a digital stream. You want absolutely NO clipping there, and both Orban and Telos do not have clippers in their audio compressors that are designed to feed digital streams for the reasons mentioned above, namely the codec. Excellent video, I wish it was 2 hours long.

I think another problem is that techs, producers, look to much at meters. Trust your ears.

That One Guy

How can you only cram that into 30 minutes? He needed AT LEAST another hour.

I love that he was using Sequoia/Samplitude v10 (maybe 9?)

this video is really informative loved it for me there were so many misconception when it comes to audio exporting thanx

Not an engineer, but ... Skipped around (will go back later) - and even from 22:00 on… Wow! Good stuff to know… It seems we can take back "more dynamics in mixes" yet still get decent levels... with "less compression" unless wanted - essentially? Will def listen to whole talk. Thanks!

It would be awesome to see some changes or appreciation of this change in some genres. For my part especially in hip hop.

So you just place a limiter just to put a level limit 0, -0,5 or -3db without lowering the threshold to compress the signal is it still distorting the sound and having an impact on the signal quality?

...
Harjawaldar

Thank you, that's very helpful and interesting. Gives me hope for the future of music.

In the end everything he said loses credibility, since in his last example he uses a level comparison instead of a LUFS-based one, the problem is that if I compare two materials based on LUFS, the one that was mixed with more LOUDNESS it still sounds louder than one mixed with a bigger headroom, in fact the vast majority of commercial pop music is still in the loudness war, and not to lose advantage, me too.

great presentation, I personally am so excited about the new normal. I really think it is easier to achieve good sound in the mix. Especially with music that has independent voices. I think it will open the world of music up to more ideas because more ideas will sound good on the record. dynameter is a good tool to work with for this stuff as well.

Some of the best masters are nearly flatlined. It just has to be done right by experts. If I put a sound in my song it's there for a reason. I don't want it peaking and troughing loads, I want to hear it all jumping out at me.

...
Yute Hube

Surely all we need to be doing is making sure it's not clipping. If you clip, when the streaming services turn that down slightly, it's still going to sound distorted. If you don't clip and they turn it up slightly - win win.

Is it me or does everything sound horrible on Apple Music? Seems way too bright in the high ends just compare any song on youtube to the apple music version

What is crazy is that I never in my whole life cared or even noticed if this song is louder or lower then that other song, nor did anyone that I know. So all this loudness war.. idk, seems more like a producers created problem that the public never really demanded

For those who weren't around in analogue days, I used DBX 160 limiters in the 70s for live engineering (released 1976). Elton John was still using them at his 2012 concert. When George Martin and son remixed The Beatles for the Love record he used analogue compressors by Rupert Neve and also Fairchild -- but he also used Pro Tools and a few digital tools -- and of course, it ended up a digital record, on CD. It sounds better than any of the original recordings -- of course it came from tape. So compression and limiting is nothing new, and digital equipment used correctly isn't the problem. Bad engineers are the problem.

I listen spotify everyday and the perceived volume is inconsistent... an extreme example can be listening "Young Sizzle - Perci Parlor" and then "Young Chop - Valley". You can't tell me thay are at the same loudness level...

nice vid i always had very different issue related to loudness since i actively stayed away from streaming services due to having a very vast physical and digital collection (vintyl,cd, flac mostly plus a tb or 2 of mp3's since storage space used to be a issue. Eitherway i always stayed away from streaming mostly due to that and i always felt there was something off about it, but just never bothered to look into the issue feeling superior about myself even though there's also many flaws in my digital collection. ( note i always prefer cables even now, its a proven technology with wich we have used for ages and the pros and cons of it even down to diff cable types and so on are known. But last few years slowly, i been following dac technologies improve massively and can even imagine not having wired connection to my amp from the source now.(for digital files or streaming i mean)

biggest problem these days honestly is that people dont uderstand even how to correctly play music, and how stereo > 5.1 or bigger. And let's not get into the basic issue of modern living spaces and room acoustics, just last not would be that im always surprised how few people have got a traditional amplifier and speakers today while at any price point this will be the only correct starting point and prolly cheaper then some garbage surround set or internal speakers etc( the devils work)@none of ur buiseness ppl like u make me happy, even if ignoring the loudness problem discussed here it is for giving me back control over volume on my pre amp, u can barely turn them nowadays unless u actively fix the problem with attenuators for example.

...
Mad Mental Hibby

Streamers are only turning down the volume of their music, because they can't compress the loudness of their ads any further.
